Uncommon Lodging – Spanish Paradors
Written by Dan
Looking for a unique and inexpensive place to stay in Spain? Book your next stay at a Parador, a refurbished historical building turned into travelers accommodations. Paradors can be former monasteries, castles, villas, manors, hospitals, and palaces that now offer luxurious accommodation at a very reasonable price. With nearly 100 paradors scattered around Spain, in small towns, big cities, and national parks, you’ll never be far from a charming and unforgettable nights’ stay. And since the paradors all feature menus that represent their region’s traditional cuisine, you’ll never go hungry either.
Paradors in the North
Near San Sebastian, in the small coastal town of Hondarribia, sleep in the 10th century castle at Parador Hondarribia, with views looking out over the sea. For easy access to Pamplona, stay at the medieval Parador Olite, full of rich tapestries, four poster beds, and wrought iron chandeliers. Retire to the stately Parador Calahorra after a day of wine tasting in the Rioja region or dine on seafood after a day frolicking in the ocean at the Parador Aiguablavanear Girona, about an hour away from Barcelona.
Paradors in Central Spain
Segovia’s Parador Segovia offers unparalleled views of the city’s Alcazar and Cathedral, while Toledo’s Parador Conde De Orgaz, a magnificent 14th century villa overlooks the city and the flowing Tagus river below. The modern Parador El Saler, south of Valencia, offers seaside views, golf, swimming, and perfectly manicured grounds.
Paradors in the South
The Parador Granada is located in the famous Alhambra, the gardens of which guests can even wander after closing. The Parador Alcazar Del Rey Don Pedro, in Carmona, dates from the 12th century and sits high on a hill overlooking the city. With its lavish courtyard and medieval antiquities, staying here truly is like stepping back in time. In the Andalucia region, stay at Parador Casa Del Corregidor in the white hill town of Arcos de la Frontera. Like the other paradors, while this one offers all the amenities and service you’d expect from a modern hotel, the setting takes you back to a long-ago time.
Paradors range from 2 to 5-star and amenities differ based on location. All offer private rooms with en-suite bath, tv, and mini-bar. Many are wheelchair accessible and some offer swimming pools and spa facilities. Most have an on-site restaurant and offer discounts to students and to seniors. Rates vary, but in general rates range from $100-$200 per night depending on location.
