Introduction To Athens

For some visiting Athens is an acquired taste. The combination of traffic and hustle and bustle of people might not make for an ideal combination for anyone looking for a relaxing holiday. Many just stay the night before heading out to one of the islands. But it is the birthplace of Western civilization after all and there are a number of wonderful sights that are worth exploring for a few days.

Surrounded by three mountains – Pendeli, Ymettos and Parnitha – and with with 12 hills within the city itself you can climb atop and enjoy spectacular views of the sprawling city down below. The most famous by far of course is the Acropolis. In the districts of Plaka, Thisso and Monastraki (located just below the Acropolis) you will find majority of sights. For the views visit Agora or Lycabettus hill (you can walk or take funicular to the latter), mingle at the Syntagma square and watch the changing of the guard or find a museum that will tickle your fancy (there is plenty to choose from).

Once you are done look for a taverna to enjoy some local delicacies – you can find them on literally every corner. Bear in mind that nightlife in Greece starts relatively late (especially during the summers) – dinner is not before 8:00pm and locals hit the clubs around midnight.
