Introduction To Hamburg

Hamburg – the second largest city in Germany and one of the most important ports in Europe – is located on Elbe river and has been (and still is) a thriving economic center.

To start your exploration of Hamburg you might start at the Harbor area, a long lasting source of income for the city. The old warehouses and the surrounding area (Speicherstadt) has been listed as UNESCO’s World Heritage sight. It is also home to a number of attractions that might be worthwhile such a Hamburg Dungeon or Miniatur Wunderland. Hamburg’s Rathaus can be found at the end of Mönckebergstrasse (you can take a look at the inside of Rathaus with a guided tour) and with it’s impressive halls it gives an idea just how powerful and influential Hamburg’s government was over the centuries. If you fancy taking in some views visit the St. Nikolai church where you can take an elevator to the top of it’s steeple and enjoy the views of Hamburg.

To indulge in a spot of shopping head to Mönckebergstrasse and Spitaler Strasse or if you fancy more traditional fare try Jungfernstieg. Another point of albeit different attraction is Sankt Pauli neighborhood known as a red light’s district with a huge selection of sex shops. It is exceptionally touristy and quite safe so pop for a visit if you are that way inclined. You can find a number of affordable places in Hamburg to have a bite to eat but do try to venture out of the obvious tourist spots to enjoy some tasty food that will not break the bank.
