Introduction To Split

The biggest city in Dalmatia Split has become a stopover for a great number of tourists who visit the Dalmatian coast in the summer months (only understandable since it is a busy ferry port shipping people back and forth to the nearby islands). But if you do have the time to explore city center of Split it can be easily accomplished since it is literally minutes away on foot from the ferry port.

Split’s main attraction is the Diocletian’s Palace – it is the old historic part of Split and well worth exploring. Small cobbled streets can lead you to the market where you can admire the local produce, Peristil (the square in front of St. Duje’s cathedral) where you can enjoy a cup of coffee during the day or performance of an opera or a ballet in the evening (usually during the Split Summer festival when performances are held all over city) or to St. Duje’s cathedral where you can climb atop the steep spire and admire postcard perfect views (bare in the mind the climb is demanding even for the uber fit as the stairs are really steep and polished from a great number of visitors who have taken the challenge over the years).

If you have more time go for a hike to Marjan mountain to take in the scent of pine trees and the sea while admiring the views of Split, it’s port and islands in the distance. Marjan can be easily accessed from the city center as well.
Once you are done exploring enjoy your coffee at Riva and watch the promenade (especially during the weekends, it is the favorite pastime for the locals). If you are looking for accommodation in Split the selection is fairly limited and pricey, but even if you are not in the very heart of the city center it is fairly easy to walk and be there in about 15 minutes.
