Calcutta is the second largest city within the country and is located in Eastern India on the bank of a river. It was the capitol of India at one time. Although many wetlands have been filled in to make room for the city, there are still many natural wetlands within the area as well as mountainous areas. Calcutta used to be three smaller villages that merged over time as the population continued to grow. An archeological site nearby shows that what is now Calcutta has been inhabited for more than two millennia.

Calcutta is most well known for its revolutionary history. This is due to its significance during India’s fight for Independence and for many trade union and leftists’ movements.
