Introduction To Calcutta
Calcutta is the second largest city within the country and is located in Eastern India on the bank of a river. It was the capitol of India at one time. Although many wetlands have been filled in to make room for the city, there are still many natural wetlands within the area as well as mountainous areas. Calcutta used to be three smaller villages that merged over time as the population continued to grow. An archeological site nearby shows that what is now Calcutta has been inhabited for more than two millennia.
Calcutta is most well known for its revolutionary history. This is due to its significance during India’s fight for Independence and for many trade union and leftists’ movements. There are historical sites and monuments throughout the city that are well worth seeing during your stay. It is also known for being a highly literary and artistic area. The local people nurture a strong sense of the arts and of community. Each neighborhood has its own community club and clubroom and most also have playing fields.
