Introduction To Cape Town

The legislative capital of South Africa and second largest city Cape Town is located fairly close to the Cape of Good Hope and even though it is a sprawling city the very heart of it can be found between Table Bay and Table Mountain.

There is plenty to see and do in Cape Town – you can pay a visit to Robben Island just off the coast where apartheid prisoners (including Nelson Mandela) where held (tours are available several times a day and some of the former prisoners do the guided tours). Since Cape Town is the legislative capital of South Africa you may pay a visit to the South African Parliament where you can learn more about the recent history and politics (tours available daily). If you are looking for more local feel pay a visit to the Bo-Kaap neighborhood – once home to the slaves from Asia today it is a a lively and quaint neighborhood with great architecture and some wonderful views of Cape Town. If you are traveling with children a visit to Two Aquarium will prove popular or you can visit the Victoria and Albert Waterfront (on the slopes of Table Mountain) which is very popular with tourists due to great number of shops and restaurants (also many tours around the harbor, Robben island and to other attractions start here). If you are more into active holidays you can take a cable car to the top of Table Mountain (or if you are fit the shortest hike to the top is about 2 hours). Also there are plenty of hiking trails all around the city – do inquire beforehand. Surfers will rejoice as there are plenty of opportunities to ride the waves whether you are a beginner or an old pro. If you just feel like lounging on the beach head to the stretch between the Kalk Bay and Muizenberg.

When you get peckish there is plenty to choose from in Cape Town – from the more touristy Victoria and Albert Waterfront to the Long Street and Kalk Bay (where you can find some excellent fish restaurants).
